Fondi
13 kilometres from Itri is the bustling inland town of Fondi, strategically located
on the ancient Appian Way which runs as straight as a die as it crosses the expansive
fertile plain. Fondi is a huge agricultural centre and its strategic position, being
situated midway between Rome and Naples, has made it into one of Italy’s most important
wholesale fruit and vegetable markets, namely MOF (Mercato Ortofrutticolo di Fondi),
and is proud to call itself “Anti-transgienico”, that is against genetic modification,
or as we would say a “GM free zone”.
Fondi’s landscape is made up of a complicated patchwork of fields, drainage channels, large greenhouses, orange groves and fruit orchards enhanced by the scenic backdrop provided by the Ausoni and Aurunci Mountains.
There are also several coastal lakes in this area some of which are volcanic in origin:
The largest is the Lago di Fondi, with its characteristic Torre del Pesce, it is a natural reserve rich in flora and fauna. There is also Lago Lungo bordered by sand dunes, and the Lago di San Puoto.
